KDFL Under 20 Division
Clane United FC 6 Kilcullen AFC 0
Clane United came into the game after an away win at BBC United. While Kilcullen were looking for a solid performance post an away defeat to Rathangan. Clane looking to stay focused on staying on top of the division with a home win and to avoid any upset from Kilcullen.
Clane United got off to a flier. After fifty six seconds Andrew Hyland’s long ball failed to be cleared fully by the Kilcullen defence, the ball broke to James Ralph who neatly stroked the ball pass the keeper to open the scoring for the home side.
After twelve minutes, from a Clane corner the ball broke outside the box and an attacking cross was not cleared and this allowed Josh Gannon to swivel to put Clane two up.
The next fifteen minutes saw Kilcullen assert some dominance and they had their first corner which led to a great deep cross which was narrowly missed to half the Clane lead. Minutes later Kilcullen were awarded a penalty, which unfortunately was not converted.
Clane started to get the upper hand again and after thirty four minutes a through ball from Hyland found Ralph whose shot was saved by the keeper, but the rebound was converted by Scott Britton. Minutes later, Britton found himself free on the left and cut inside the defender to score a fine goal from distance, giving the goalkeeper no chance.
Clane started the second half with purpose and were rewarded three minutes in with an excellent back post header from Hyland from a corner to make it five.
Kilcullen efforts deserved a goal, with the cross bar and upright on three occasions keeping them from getting on the score sheet.
The final goal of the game came just before the hour mark, when a long ball found Gannon in space. A superb take down and twenty five-yard drive found the top corner to round off an excellent Clane team performance.
Credit to Kilcullen who battled very strongly in this league fixture and deserved a goal or two for their positive work ethic. Key players for Kilcullen were Luke Boland & Cian McGowan. Clane had some fine performances, and key defensive players Cillian Byrne, Daire O’Beirne helped Clane to keep a clean sheet. A special word of thanks for the referee who allowed the game to flow throughout in a very sporting game of football.
