Karina Donnelly Senior Cup Semi Final

Clane United 1 Kildre Town AFC 0

With a place up for grabs in a Karina Donnelly Senior Cup Final it was great to see a large crowd turn out in their numbers to Doctor’s road Clane on Friday evening where Clane United took on Kildare Town AFC . The game started at a frenetic pace with both sides keen to stamp their authority on the game. The home side dominated the first half but a youthful Kildare side looked dangerous on the break . The visitors created two opportunities to take the lead one sliding narrowly wide of the Clane goals and one goal ruled out for offside as it rebounded off the crossbar. The home side had the bulk of the chances. Eoghan Maguire was unfortunate with a twenty five yard half volley striking the post . As they piled on the pressure the Kildare keeper kept them at bay with great saves from Maguire, Killian Patchell and Sean Harnett to keep the score a nil all going into half time .

The second half started much in the same vein with the home side being frustrated not to take the lead but wary on the counter attack the threat Kildare posed. Killian Patchell was instrumental in closing the danger with some fantastic tackles. On the seventieth minute Clane finally took the lead when Andy Brogan found a small bit of space and curled one into the roof of the Kildare net to open the scoring for the home side Clane could have added a second to calm the nerves as Maguire posed a constant threat up front and a Mark Kelly header forced a top drawer save from the Kildare keeper . The away side applied a bit of pressure in the last ten minutes but the Clane defence held firm to see the game out . Best for Clane in an overall fine team performance were Cathal Geoghegan, Mark Kelly, Maguire and man of the match Killian Patchell.
